My partner does this thing where she laughs during sex sometimes. It makes me feel really weird and confused. She says she’s enjoying everything I’m doing, but I can’t help feeling like she thinks I’m moaning too much or doing something awkward. Is it normal to laugh during sex? Am I just being paranoid?
Thanks for writing in with this question. There are so many pressures around sex and I think laughing during sex is one we rarely hear about. It can be kind of unsettling when we’re in the heat of the moment and suddenly we (or our partners) burst into a fit of giggles. What does it all mean?
There are a ton of reasons someone might laugh during sex, the vast majority of which are totally normal. Sex is not like you see in the movies. It isn’t some stylized bullshit where everyone is a porn star, doing everything perfectly and orgasming in 15 seconds. No. It's silly, weird, awkward, sweaty, and sometimes just plain old funny. We have this weird pressure we put on ourselves to be super "sexy" and sultry during sex, but a lot of the time that isn't how is goes down. And that's OK!
Sex is FUN. We laugh we when things are fun. If you're having a good time during sex and enjoying yourself, you might find yourself laughing because it's all so carefree and nice. You might also experience something awkward or classically funny. Maybe you're on top and your partner's penis or strap on falls out. That could be funny and make you laugh. Maybe your partner is doing a strip tease and it's just silly and you both start laughing. It doesn’t mean anything is wrong. It’s just the way humans are.
We should stop taking ourselves so seriously during sex and let loose and enjoy ourselves. If you take yourself too seriously during sex, how can you relax enough to have an orgasm?
Don't take it personally if someone you're having sex with laughs. We get so self-conscious, like if our partner laughs during sex we must be gross, our bodies looks weird or abnormal, or we think we perhaps we make strange noises. It's truly not personal most of the time and has nothing to do with your prowess in the sheets.
Don’t stress out, boo! It's totally normal to laugh during sex.
You may find something funny, you might think of something funny that happened earlier that day, or you may just be enjoying yourself so much that laughter is the way you express yourself. As we know, sex is super fun!
If your partner laughs during sex, it's probably because they're so comfortable with you that all the tension is taken out of their need to "act" in a certain way. They can fully express themselves and enjoy the experience without freaking about if their thighs look fat in this light. Sex is whimsical at its core. It's a form of play. That's why we call sexual acts "sexual play.” It should be fun for everyone involved. This may include laughter at times.
It's pretty rare that you're laughing at a partner (or your partner is laughing at you) in a cruel way. Something might just be funny to them. Laughter during sex can be due to it's silliness at times, awkward moments, or just because of plain, unbridled joy.
So, What are some things to say to your partner if you laugh during sex and they are offended or put off by it?
Be honest about why you're laughing if your partner is offended or put off by it. Laughter is a natural human emotion and we do it for many reasons. Tell your partner that you feel self-conscious and ask for reassurance. I’m sure she’ll give it to you. My guess is she’s laughing because you’re doing the RIGHT things, not the wrong things.
She should tell you what made her laugh and explain that it isn't personal or about something you did that was "wrong." There is no wrong during sex. Feeling comfortable enough to just let go and release your joy during is awesome. We should embrace it!
I hope this helps!
